The Frog and the Toad
Frogs and Toads make excellent garden guests because they eat lots of bugs, slugs and snails. Any pool of water, whether it be a muddy puddle or a fully matured wildlife pond, will attract a diverse range of wildlife including frogs and toads. You don’t need a big garden – mini wildlife ponds can be created from upcycled materials like old plant pots or washing up bowls!
From February, your pond will become a hive of activity as frogs and toads enter their breeding season. You might notice frogspawn, which is laid in clumps, and toadspawn, formed of long ribbons. Add a ramp to your pond to ensure wildlife can easily climb in and out.
Young frogs and toads will start to leave ponds in early summer, searching for quiet corners to feed and grow. Leave some long patches of grass in your garden – this will also encourage a variety of insects!
