The name WoodStone® (a mix of wood and concrete) might sound a little industrial but for garden birds this natural and sustainable material creates a pleasant nesting environment. The mixture of wood fibres and concrete helps to stabilise the internal temperature of the nest box, resulting in much less fluctuation from day to night, an important benefit for nesting birds during the breeding season, and also for birds that may roost in the nest boxes at other times of the year. The insulating properties of the material can let birds nest slightly earlier in the season, allowing them to make the most of natural food supplies, particularly caterpillars, and may help birds such as House or Tree Sparrows to produce an extra brood later in the year.

The fine texture of the boxes allow the young birds to grip the sides with their claws, making it easy for them to fledge when they’re ready. The porous nature of the material lets the box “breathe” and minimises or eliminates condensation. WoodStone® is highly durable and resistant to all weather conditions so will last for years. Studies have shown that these sorts of nest boxes are occupied more readily than conventional boxes and provide much greater protection against nest predators such as squirrels and woodpeckers.
